The Futures Story

Baroness Janke. had the vision for Bristol Futures in 2010 whilst she was Leader of Bristol City Council.  Bristol Futures was unique - a crosscutting Council Department to lead on digital innovation and infrastructure, economic development and skills, resilience and environmental sustainability and European and international strategy.

Stephen Hilton was appointed as the first Director of Bristol Futures. He set about building a team that faced outwards towards the city, Europe and the World.

Bristol Futures' mission was a creative, smart, green and connected city - attractive to funders and investors; recognised locally and globally for its willingness to experiment openly with disruptive new ideas and for building an inclusive, citizen-focussed approach to innovation.

Track forward 6 years and Bristol Futures can point to an unparalleled Record of securing multi-millions pound new investment in digital infrastructure and smart city demonstration projects ranging from smart energy grids to driverless cars; winning recognition for the city as European Green Capital 2015, a Rockefeller Global 100 Resilient City, a Super Connected 'Gigabit' City and a Future City Demonstrator; and making real world impact through initiatives such as, the Bristol API and Open Data Platform; as well as inspiring new city institutions and programmes such as Engine Shed, Invest in Bristol and Bath, the Bristol Brussels Office and Bristol is Open, Playable Cities and Bristol Citizen Sensing.

In Pcrober 2016, Stephen Hilton made the difficult decision to move on from Bristol City Council to pursue his vision for a new shared model of developing smart, sustainable, resilient cities based on Public - Private - People - Partnerships. Suzanne Wilson, formally City Innovation Manager at the City Council joined and Bristol Futures Global Ltd launched in November 2017.
